eBay is going through an identity crisis. The company, which helped shape Web 1.0 e-commerce, now confronts a stark reality: Internet shopping no longer looks as it did a decade ago. Auction commerceâ;;still the company's crown jewelâ;;is losing much of its luster. In order to keep revenue and profit growing, eBay is being forced to reboot its brand.

The earnings eBay announced after Wednesday's market close indicate that the company is making impressive strides at reinventing itself. But eBay's adaptation may really be fundamental change. Will eBay 2.0 still be recognizable as eBay?

their problem is online retailers can now match them on price, who wants to waste their time in auctions when you can buy brand new?

Because there are a lot of things you simply cannot get new, or if you can the quality is ******e. Not to mention the fact that by buying used for items you can get new you're doing good for the planet and for every person on earth. Which I know won't appeal to the 'buy lots of crap' mindset, but might appeal to people who actually care about their fellow human beings.

When you are looking for hard to find pieces - vintage pottery, glass etc, you can look for years and never find the piece. I've added many items to my glass and pottery collection from eBay

Unfortunately when eBay became so huge, it was flooded with knockoffs and pirated copies of CDs, movies etc

They failed to listen and many buyers were ripped off. Shill bidding was also a huge problem that wasn't addressed.

eBay was more interested in the bottom line than the plethora of fake items being sold and the shill bidding that was occurring. They made changes to "protect" bidder IDs which made detecting shill bidders impossible to the users of the site. eBay's reputation was damaged and many suspect it is beyond repair

Plus there are those who drive up the bids so you can never win at a good price.
