Bush met with his senior economic advisers at the Energy Department to discuss soaring prices for gasoline and crude oil. Bush said one answer is to increase supply in this country by tapping "the vast potential" of crude oil reserves on offshore lands and in Alaska as well as in oil shale in the western part of the United States.
With gasoline prices above $4 a gallon, Bush and his Republican allies think American's reluctance to drill in pristine waters and lands is diminishing and that there is an opportunity for oil companies to move into areas that have been off limits.

If he wants any drilling, require the oil companies not to export our oil until the prices come way, way down - otherwise no way!!

Drilling offshore won't help! We need alternatives to oil! There isn't anything that is going to stop the prices from soaring.
Oil companies have leases in National Park across the USA, that they are just sitting on, not drilling! Create a shortage, with a great demand for a product, the prices will go through the roof!
Thanks engineer!

They need to start drilling on some of the 68 million acres they hold the leases on now that they aren't even utilizing. That's the reason Congress won't give him the approval to lease other lands out to big oil, the leases for the 68 million acres that big oil has now isn't being used, if they give big oil more acreage to NOT drill on only keeps us in the same Catch 22, which is exactly where they want us. Congress is trying to make Bush hold Big Oil responsible for the leases they aren't utilizing now, not give them more land to hold leases on and not use. They don't want anyone else to get these leases, if they do, they may be drilled on and actually find a solution, then they lose their billions in profits.

I agree with tex. Drilling for new oil will save pennies on a gallon. The real culprits are the sinking value of the dollar and the speculaters and stock gurus who keep playing their ridiculous what if scenarios. I still feel that if we stopped the trading of all oil stocks and the futures market for 6 months the price of oil would drastically fall.

Let them start drilling using the leases they already have first....they also have to use every drop they get here, so no selling to any other country other than our own. On top of that...they MUST discount the price back to $1.00 per gallon for us. If that is not agreeable...screw 'em like they are screwing us. The billions these b astards are making should be stopped immediately if not sooner. If they don't like it too efin bad. I for one am tired of being bent over and then told to say Thank you, may I have another? Where are the people that are supposed to be looking out for all of us? Why don't we just nationalize the gas companies? That's right....just take em over...kick the efin thieves out and put someone who will do the job at a reasonable salary. After that, we take a good long look at the banking industry next!

What's the point of pushing for more off shore or in land drilling while there are leases on 68 million acres of land for drilling that isn't even being taken advantage of?? This is just crazy, Bush is so busy trying to make it all look like a Congressional issue, while it's really an oil company issue.
He needs to try to get laws passed to make the oil companies take advantage of the acreage they already have leases on rather then give them more area to NOT take advantage of, yet sit and hold the leases, and drill other places and make us pay higher prices.
This is exactly why Congress won't give him the go ahead, they want him to hold these oil companies responsible for the 68 million acres that they are not utilizing, and either US IT OR LOSE IT!

How do they know if they won't drill? Furthermore, why want the leases on the property if it's not cost-effective, why not give the lease to someone else? CROOKS, holding this property, keeping our own resources from us, while using someone elses at sky high prices. The proof is in the pudding.

Bush is just trying to get Big Oil Companies leases to EVERY acre of land that has the possiblity of a quart of oil on them before he leaves office. He's not telling the whole story, just trying to make it appear the the Democrat Congress is the reason for high gas prices. NOT TRUE, our supposedly Democrat Congress doesn't have enough of a majority to pass anything, however they do have enough of a majority to keep Bush from handing out every acre of land in the United States to Big Oil, and that's pizzing him off bad.
Good work Congress.
