It is not only Oil it is natural gas that is rising as well. It is time for the majority of the Democrat(ic)s to part from the Iranian position of holding the U.S. over a barrel.

Why do you think drilling in ANWR would eliminate the U.S. dependency on foreign fuels?

A Dept of Interior study projected that ANWR could produce a mere 1.4 million barrels of oil per day, which would increase U.S. production by ~25%.

However, that is still insufficient to wean the U.S. from 10.1 million barrels per day which the U.S. must import from other countries, including the 5.6 million barrels per day we import from OPEC.
Even if we started drilling in ANWR today, we wouldn't see a drop of that oil for 10-20 years, which is how long it'd take for the infrastructure to be built. By then, increasing demand from China and India would offset the increase in supply.

Why do you assume that this would be the only supply being added to the global supply. Would adding 1.4 million barrals from ANWR, and tapping into the known reserves in the Gulf Of Mexico as China is doing now impact the price of oil? Of course it would.
I think ANWR's 10% is a significant amount.
As far as OPEC adjusting their output. Western North Dakota has large oil reserves. By some estimates, it has more oil than the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. A federal government geologist estimated a formation called the Bakken shale holds 400 billion barrels of oil.
175 miles off the coast of Louisiana the oil industry estimates it will be able to recover more than 3 billion barrels, and perhaps as much as 15 billion barrels, of oil from a geological area known as the lower tertiary trend, making it the biggest addition to U.S. petroleum reserves in decades.
Why are you opposed to additional supplies on the market?

When are you going to start factoring in global pollution from CO2 burning of fossil fuels in your equations. Always, there is talk of increasing production, yet never a factor of what increasing burning of fossil fuels will do the the worlds climate.
Even Exon has discontinued financing of anti-global warming propaganda. McBush has stated global warming is a massive problem.
Why not concentrate on burning LESS fuel, by means of massive restructuring of transportation.
Oil is a national security issue. We should nationalise all US oil.

America consumes 25% of all oil, yet consisits of 5% of the worlds population. This is insane. This will not continue. China is rising, India is rising, they both have the bomb.
Drilling more oil is NOT an option. We must preserve the earth for future generations by not killing it with CO2 from fossil fuel burning.
Inceasing production without factoring in how that also increases CO2 production, is completely irresponsible.

You would think wrong. The combined oil in ANWR, the Dakotas, and the Gulf of Mexico is NOT enough to compensate for the over 10 million barrels per day the U.S. imports and not enough to achieve energy independence.
You seem to be forgetting that:
1) U.S. oil consumption is growing and it would take 10-15 years to develop the infrastructure to mine ANWR. By that time, rising U.S. oil consumption would far outpace additional oil output ANWR.
2) Demand from emerging economies, particularly China and India, is growing exponentially and will outpace the modest rise in oil output from ANWR, the Dakotas, and Gulf of Mexico.
3) Due to the weak dollar, oil companies actually make more profit by selling oil to Europe and its strong Euro. Increased oil production would not necessarily make it to the U.S.; it would go to the highest bidder.

But you forget Canada, and as it is right now we supply 23% of your oil, but can do no more due to the fact that the pipelines are full, can,t get it to you unless by truck and with fuel costs that leaves rail.
But by 2011 we are supposed to be able to triple our out put to you with the new pipe lines under construction, also there is much talk of a line from Alaska to Chicago so I do believe if that happens we can theoretically supply you with 60% of your oil.

It seems that American economy depends on blackmailing countries to do business in dollars. It's a sign of economic collapse.

QUANTIFIABLE FACT: CO2 molecules absorbs heat as IR radiation.
QUANTIFIABLE FACT: Hydrocarbon combustion increases atmospheric CO2 concentrations.
Therefore, it follows that CO2 released into the atmosphere from hydrocarbon combustion is absorbing heat as terrestrial IR and preventing it from being released into space.
The only thing scientists are debating is how quickly this warming is happening, but very few (if any) dispute that such warming is actually occurring.

Isn't it interesting that every time someone mentions drilling along out three coasts, as well as land mass, as well as ANWR; the left on this site only talks about ANWR? Do you not realize that ANWR is only a small portion of the available oil? ANWR will take five years to drill and see results, however in the meantime, drilling in 'other' oil rich areas would have an almost immediate return and increase the supply, thus reducing the cost much faster.

Until we can figure out how to make all the varieties of other things that are produced using oil we will not be weaned off it, reduction in dependency is all that we can expect to accomplish.
What we need is a brilliant mind that can figure out an energy source that will provide cheap, abundant means of locomotion and illumination. Other than that , good luck on doing away with oil altogether.

The top 6 countries that consume oil are
USA, China, Japan, Germany, Russia, and India
Only #'s 2-6 equal what USA consumes.
So if all 5 of those countries were able to do 100% conservation, only 50% of the problem is solved if USA does nothing.
Sorry, but USA is where it has to start.
Of every folly, misdeed, poor performance or what have you that USA has; so has Canada, only you are 10x bigger so you have 10x as more.
This is not bashing any country, just the politics that allow it to happen, yours and mine.

My comment had to do with the artical, where from my reading has your country hostage because of your need to import oil, if your country does not wish to be hostage then the change must come from within your country either by drilling for more or using less, to me the best solution is to use less.

Oil in ANWR would have done little to change oil prices, as OPEC would simply readjust their output to offset the relatively small in increase in domestic oil extracted from ANWR.
Besides, the currently inflated global oil prices have more to do with the falling dollar, futures trading, and Middle East instability, than with oil in ANWR.
