This is a real issue from non-profit hospitals that do not treat charity cases, public broadcast stations that do nothing locally, churches that sit on large properties that are not used for religious use and other non-profits that do no good in the public interest. Tax exemption is supposed to promote the needs of the public, not just to hold property until it sells for a profit.

Simple answer, tax the "non-profit" churches..... Just look at their leaders lifestyles FIRST..... If they drive a clapped out old ford, leave them tax-free. If they drive a brand-new car, live in a mansion, tax 'em to hell !!! The US Govt would raise 10's of billions......
Then again, I'm a cynical agnostic, so might just be a tad biased..... :-)

There are 2 sentences to sum up this entire article:
"state and local governments are under financial pressure because of lower tax revenues."
"And, concerned about the way some churches are spending money"
It is a dig for money by government and the continuing assult on churches. Very simple. The author put down the rest just as covering for the main message.
Now go debate the 2 issues and have fun.

I think it is time to get rid of these tax exempt entities and it is not just the churches. I know a couple that work for a "not for profit" company. The real deal is that the company is making Pa-lenty of profit and a big reason is that it is a "not for taxes" not a "not for profit" company. The irony is that both people are hard core liberal and they are for higher taxes, just as long as they are not in that mix.
