Security staff at telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom are suspected of breaching German data privacy laws during a secret attempt to identify the sources of high-level leaks to the media, the company said Saturday, May 24.

      Excuse my naivete but it seems to me that the call data that was accessed belonged to Deutsche Telekom to begin with so how is it a breach of security if they reviewed data that belongs to them as long as they don't share this data with any other outside entity? As I understand it, the calls were made from Deutsche Telekom internal phones so this data is theirs pure and simple. I assume that they provide call histories at their client's request for them to review so why can't they review the call histories of their internal phones? German law must be a whole lot more restrictive than US laws in this area.
