Back in the 70s I used to sell yellow page advertising for SW Bell, when it was part of the former ATT. At the time they were test marketing a way to advertise "on-line". There were 5 test cities, if I remember correctly Buffalo NY was one of the first. The idea was to put free computers in every customers' home to replace the Yellow Pages. It was supposed to be cheaper than the printing/paper costs of YP production and increase advertising revenues. That way, prices and sales could be added to the current directory ads. When it came time to launch in Austin, a class action suit was brought by several major newspapers saying it would put them out of business, hence blocking one of the first "internet birthings".

News papers aren't going away. They will simply have to retrench as their circulations decline. There are plenty of people like myself who prefer to read a paper than a computer screen. They transport more easily from home to office and can be read in bed before going to sleep or at the breakfast table before going to work.
