Politicians know how to do one thing well: hand out money.

With a possible recession looming, politicos in Washington, D.C., are rushing through a tax-rebate package twice as big as any cash giveaway in the past four decades.

Which companies should expect a slice of this $100 billion pie? Though a $1,200 check may bring sellers of flat-screen TVs to mind, history shows most Americans are likely to spend the largest chunk on basics such as food and clothing.

That's good news for Wal-Mart Stores (WMT, news, msgs), the nation's largest retailer, and others like Target (TGT, news, msgs) and Kohl's (KSS, news, msgs).

Lower-end retailers like these, along with restaurants, could get a $66 billion revenue boost in the third and fourth quarters if past consumer behavior is any guide. Wal-Mart alone could see $4 billion to $5 billion from the rebates in just the third quarter.

What we need in the US is the discouragement of buying from these job and money exporters and to reinstitute the manufacturing base where people will get high paying, living wage jobs. Our biggest detriments and enemies to the US are container ships and outsourcers!! They are much more dangerous than Bush's terrorism

It costs less to send a ship full of cars across the Pacific Ocean to California than it costs to send a train load of cars here from Dearborn. Higher tariffs are a necessity if we want to protect American businesses.

Walmart won't get a nickel. I refuse to support China.

          engineer ~

You're right on topic. It's one of the reasons I was sorry

to see Edwards drop out - he brought up down-to-earth issues

that are vital to the middle class - or as I've said before,

the Nouveau Poor - and those that arrived in the poverty

belt ahead of us. Hopefully, the two remaining Democrats

noticed the interest in Edwards' cause and will add his

          concerns to their own platforms.

The article poses the question - What would you do with your

rebate? Well, I'd put it in the bank or pay a bill. That

one-time piddly payout will not generate a fix for the

economy nationally - it will (maybe) by one month's worth of

heating oil or one month of health coverage.

Sorry to say - but that kind of "stimulus" wouldn't even

fix a families fiscal woes - let alone the whole country's.

I'll be damned if I'll be hanging out at my mailbox waiting

for it - I want a real fix for the nation! You too?

Well, my microwave died last night! Is there any microwaves made in the USA?

I will not spend any money I receive in a rebate, on anything made in other countries, I want to buy Made in the USA, Only!

        Thanks for the article, engineer!
