"Under one scheme, the IRS said, people are receiving phone calls telling them they can only receive a rebate if they provide bank account information for a direct deposit."
"The tax agency stressed that it does not collect information by telephone and that no legislation has been enacted that would allow it to provide advance payments to taxpayers or that specifies the details of those payments."

I'm always receiving bogus lottery awards from somewhere outside this country that want my personal information to expedite the winnings. Yeah, right. Or my bank has had a security breach and they must verify my account with my personal information. Yeah, right. Ah yes, and those scams that says you have won a FREE camera, HD TV, car, or dream home and in the fine print are the words, "awarded after completing sponsors offers." Give me a break!

Stoners said it all.The vultures gather and in this technological age it's getting easier for them.
BUT, there's always a sizable of a percentage of people who always fall for these things and always will be.
Remember in history books the "snake oil salesman."

No matter how many times the media runs news stories about the scams people still fall for it, got to wonder about the intelligence levels...

What amazes me is the number of people willing to perpetrate these scams. Most of the time they pick on seniors, my neighbor is a 72 widow and she always gets people calling to scam her. Fortunately she is smart enough to not give them the informaion that they request.
A good and timely post STONERS.

Yes, I don't know why, but it happens quite frequently. I constantly get asked about these types of emails and what they should do with them.
I'm always saying to myself, "Really? You really have to ask me what to do with that email asking for your bank information??"

The IRS warns of rebate scams. That's funny, The Federal Reserve and the IRS are the biggest and most successful scams in History.

Last year a group of people were stealing mail out of home mail boxes in our area - both delivered mail and mail you were sending. They were also taking bags of trash
The police offered some helpful tips
If at all possible drop off payments with checks at the post office
If you are sending checks to pay for credit card bills, don't put your entire credit card acct number on the check - only the last 4 digits.
Don't put the checks that often come with your credit card bills in the trash - shred them. Apparently ID thieves are offering $10 or more per check - even the guys who collect trash have been found going through bags looking for these checks
Shred all credit card offers - don't put them in the trash
