Americans own trillions of dollars in stock through pension funds, savings plans and as individual investments. And increasingly, they're using their clout to rein in corporate America, launching campaigns to dump a CEO, to change a company's unprofitable course or to go green.

"Shareholder activism has been on the rise ever since the Enron and MCI WorldCom scandals, when employees and shareholders lost hundreds of millions of dollars to fraud, says Amy Borrus, deputy director of the nonprofit Washington-based Council of Institutional Investors. "Directors realize they have to take note when shareholders raise concerns."

We CAN make a difference with our dollars!!! Sell off your stock in companies who's policies you don't agree with or get active in writing them about your concerns.

The corporate lobbyists like to foster the feelings of meakness and despondency among the voters and those that oppose their corrupt influence on our government.

It is only by concerted action of the electorate that we can ever hope to take back our government. We can make a difference. But it requires inspiration, perspiration, vigilance, and unity. While we are working towards those goals, I try not to become too angry with those of us who have given up hope altogether. Altruism is the last hope a failing democracy.

If you look at where your money is invested, (i.e., Money Markets, IRA et all) you can see who the corporations are that we are invested in and start writing letters.

A Board of Directors will listen to stock holders concerns over how much a CEO makes (and them), corporate perks, corporate spending EVEN the handling of employees benefits.

We can effect change, especially when a community gets together and starts action.

If there is power to be had in this mode then we should take advantage of it! If money and numbers are the only language they understand and respect, by all means, use it!

I must admit I know squat when it comes to numbers. But here is an interesting article as well as the web site for eco freedom that deals with stocks, and all of the stuff that is beyond me. I can't even read through one of the many prospectus??? I recieved . If they would stop sending me all those books I think maybe at least a few trees would have lived.

Power in numbers, we stick together we can accomplish much. Citgo is suffering right now because people refuse to support Hugo Chevez. Bank of America suffered when they gave credit cards to illegals, many people pulled accounts there. I cancelled my Progressive Auto Insurance when I found out it is tied to George Soros. Hit them in the pocket book, that's all they understand.

Citgo accomplishes much. It does what other oil companies don't . Citgo is the co. that has been setting up heating programs for many that would have otherwise not been able to get heating fuel. The Citgo prog. are in the US.

I love buyblue.org, I always used it to check out where the money was going in contributions and how employees are treated.

If we want to take power back and disable the corporations, I suggest we all buy gold and silver. The dollar is diving and the inflation is rising. With money in banks and stocks, when the dollar crashes, it will be the little people who get hurt.

While I agree that stockholder activism can be a positive, an even more positive step is to protect yourself. That means having the larger part of your portfolio in real money. Things like krugerands and maple leafs.
