This is a very tough lesson to learn. . . albeit one I wouldn't mind having some experience dealing with =)

I've never played the lottery either. I won 300 bucks at bingo once and took my grandmother & her sister out for dinner because they sprung for the cards.
Another time, I put a quarter in a slot machine and walked away. Some old man beside me grabbed me and told me to push the button (lol). I won 40 bucks. I can't remember what I did with my huge winnings.

If I won the lottery my phone would be disconnected and I would have a private cell phone number. Any person trying to get me to invest in anything would get the door slammed in their face. You have just got something that most people will never see(millions in your bank account). Why do you feel you have to invest? 10 million dollars at a 5% yearly return will get you $500,000 dollars a year in interest. Who in the world can't live on that! So if you win the lottery you might want to just put it in the bank and leave it there and enjoy life!

Reminds me of an incident with my sons. Every time we'd go into a convienence store they would want to put quarters in that machine where a bar is pushing quarters toward a drop-off always with a lot of quarters on the verge of falling. I always told them "no" cause that was gambling.
Once, when they were finally old enough to ride their bikes to the corner store by themselves they came back all excited. Seems since I wasn't there to tell them "no" they put a quarter in the machine and an avalanch of quarters fell. They had won big and were so excited. I asked what they did with their winnings. You guessed it! They put every one of those quarters back in the machine to try to win again and left with nothing.
I hope the lesson was learned.

Two friends of mine won millions. One 3 mil the other 7 million. Both are doing fantastic and are very happy. Most people have no idea how much money they won or that they have to pay taxes on not just the winnings, but gifts as well. Both friends are very cautious, have money managers and have their accounts audited on a quarterly basis (checks and balances). Money is a full time job and they sign all outgoing checks. One is retired and the other still works their 9-5 job.

Perhaps "government plus money....." But the truth is that the last Democratic adminisatrations in the nation and my state have had to start out by cleaning up financial messes which Rupublicans created, and have left office with the finances in pretty good shape, only to have the Republican train wreck all over again.

I was in McDonalds (don't ask why) earlier and an EMT was there with the rest of his crew. I'll be damned if he didn't win $25,000!
Las year a co-worker of mine had to miss work because his son had a doctors appt. He was telling me that morning how he could not afford to miss work. On their way home from the doctor they stopped for gas. While in the store his 5 year old pointed to a scratch off ticket and asked what it was, he figured what better way to explain what a waste of money they were buy getting one. That 2 dollar ticket won $100,000!

You have to be stupid to play the Lottery in the first place so it shouldn't be surprising that the winners act stupid after winning.

The sad part is that the lottery was suppose to supplement the education of the kids in school which it doesn't. Most of the money stays with the lottery group for administrative expenses of operating it; and the rest goes to the general fund to be dispersed they way they want. Obviously you are correct in calling it the stupidity tax. People just keep playing thinking it's helping education & that they will win big; unfortunately they don't.

Most of these winners were spending a huge amount of the money they had to begin with on tickets - so what makes you think they could handle it once they won
This week there is a story about a woman who embezzled $600,000 from a charity she worked for -spent it on lottery tickets - why she didn't just use the money shows how whack she must be - & besides she must be the most unlucky player ever, never won anything

This isn't always the case, but many people are poor because they can't take care of money in the first place. Then the poor by lotto tickets, and when they win it, they do just like they usually do spend it all.

I guess I will never have their problem. I never play the lottery and in reality I win a dollar every day by not doing so. That is $365 each year or $23,725 over 65 years.

If I won the lottery, I'd tell ONLY my spouse and my son. Nobody else!

A money windfall does not endow the recipient more or better intelligence. It does not change your character or psyche, it just provides more money. I sure would like a windfall but I will not play the lottery.
