Gas prices are hitting record highs, sending the nation into a spasm of shared angst. Average prices nationwide now exceed $3.22 for a gallon of regular, and many people are pledging to drive less while politicians agitate against "price gouging" and fat oil company profits.

Still, prices have spiked 50 percent since late January and are expected to climb moreâ;;perhaps substantially if there's an active hurricane season, as predicted. Prices have already exceeded forecasts for the usual hikes that precede summer's driving seasonâ;;and are higher than last year, though the cost of crude oil, about $65 a barrel, is lower.

I don't know how gas prices can jump up .10 to .15 at noon, just because a news flash came out at 6 am. I know the stations didn't pay that amount for gas already in the tanks, or on the way to the station that day. And why does it jump .10 to .15 and only drop by .02 or .03 every other week?

Good submission STONERS.
A friend and I were talking about gas prices and Americans driving habits. I don't think there will be true outcry until gas is $5.00 a gallon or more.
Sure right now the poor and lower middle class are struggling but the upper middle class ($100,000 a year or more) haven't had to change their habits because they can afford not to. Right now the decision to change is still in their hands. They're not being forced to make drastic changes or change habits like some of us are having to do.

Right, funny thing oil companies feel guilty enough to give us reasons for the price hikes. The news reported a couple weeks ago that even though crude oil prices lowered they had to raise prices for refinery renovations. When did we vote on that? Can't trillion dollar corporations shell out a million to take care of their own refineries?

New Jersey is set to up the gas tax but for how much is not known yet. I suppose we will have to learn to drive small cars again instead of the SUV's that are driven now. You think that will happen??? I bet not.

I live in Virginia and the lowest I have found was 2.83 per gallon while other places in the same county are 3.20. Someone needs to do something. With gas prices going up, so is everything else, except our salaries, of course.

George Bush is a terrible failure as a president of this country..pres roosevelt emmediately froze all prices when WW2 started- to stop war prfiteering..Mr. Bush is profitting from this war, as is cheny..they do not want to end it, for losing thier profits..These two men should immediately be impeached...Then Bush sould be tried for treason for making secret deals with the Saudis, not in this countrys best interest..cheny for making secret deals with the oil companys, --so now we have the highest oil prices ever..We must --NEVER RE ELECT ANY POLITICIAN--EVER...WE MUST ALSO DEPORT EVERY ILLEGAL ALIEN FROM THIS COUNTRY--AND SEND THE BILL FOR IT TO THE COMPANYS WHO USED THEM AS SCAB LABOR..Then put army snipers on the border from texas to calif, and kill any one who enters our country illegally...That way we can kill all terrorists who try to come and kill us..along with the drug runners too.. A win win situation.

You're really good at mixing issues. Interstingly enough, you didn't seem to feel the need to provide any proof of your allegations.....ain't the net wonderful? It provides a medium for everyone to state their view regardless of their bias or lack of evidence.

Try water. $.79 for a 20oz bottle. There are 128 ounces in a gallon...do the math. I haven't seen anyone complaining about the price of water....imagine their profits.

I have it on good authority that the problem with the price of milk is the cows. They are demanding better working conditions; they all want to be like the "happy" cows in Ca. We need also be aware that these very same discontented cows are making a signifcant contribution to global warming either by their excessive burping or equally excessive flatulence (it depends on which story you want to believe).

Like I said I have a 40 year old news paper, I could tell you prices on quite a few things. You wouldn't believe it! Then again, as the price of consumer products rise so goeth your salary and the cost of living in general.
I'm sure people in the 70's were balking at .65 a gallon gas prices and wouldn't we kill to be there right now? So, there ya go!
