Prices continue to rise in most of the country, as the Midwest saw prices soar a nickel or more a gallon in one day in several states.

Even with the record gas prices, AAA is predicting a record number of Americans will be hitting the road during the holiday weekend, with 38.3 million expected to be traveling 100 miles or more, up 1.7 percent from a year ago. And most of those - 32.1 million - will be driving, according to the motorist group.

right! depending on the station, I've seen it upwards of 3.70's. amazing.
We're being robbed blind by the big oil corporations and their buddies in government that are protecting them from competition....it needs to stop.

Last Christmas we decided to take all of our vacation days at once and spend this holiday in our motor home just traveling over the US for 2 months-nothing structured just pick a direction and go. We thought we would look up the state we were in on the internet and see if there was anything we wanted to visit while we were there and just ramble maybe 2 days in one state maybe 10 in another pending on the amount of places we wanted to see. This was planned around Christmas of last year when the gas prices were down, now regular here(NC) is $3.35 a gallon and super(which we have to use in the RV or it runs funny)is over $4-I think it was 4.27 yesterday.The RV only gets 7-10 miles to the gallon-you do the math... There is no way we can do this now, we have 2 months off work and our vacation plan's are out the window unless we only go for 1 month and spend the other months alloted money on gas.We kept waiting and hopeing it would start going back down but I think we're outta luck.

Here in California though our county has one of the lowest we see nothing below $3.42 for regular and are starting to see premium as much as $4.29 at some stations.

Ya know, I only started driving 6 years ago. I used to get gas for $0.97 cents a gallon and I could fill up my car on $12-$15 on an empty tank.

I'm not sure if your post was meant to be funny, in which case haha. If it wasn't and you're serious, then comparing the price of a gallon of Starbucks to a gallon of gas is ridiculous.
I've often thought that the quickest way to finding alternative sources of energy was to keep the price of gas high. This should raise the demand by consumers for cars that not only get better gas mileage, but that run on alternative fuels. Doesn't seem like the car companies will do it simply because it's better for the environment or unless there's a profit to be made...

1 8 ounce cup per day seven days a week and you still drink less than 2 gallons a MONTH. Compare the amount spent vs 2-4 gallons of gas a day some people use to get to/from work.
On the other hand you can stop the Starbucks anytime and brew your own at about $12.00 per pound for roasted beans a pound of which lasts us about 3 weeks. You cannot change the fuel you use in your car so easily so there really is no comparison.

Most people I have been talking to, are staying home this year. People can not afford to pay higher prices on everything in their daily lives. If high and higher prices continues for much longer, All businesses are going to start feeling the losses in their profits.
All the 'excuses' that the oil companies keep spuing, as to why the prices are so high, are getting old. With record profits for the oil companies & increased tax revenue for the States & Federal government, this leaves only the businesses & the consumers to lose!
Gas per gallon here in north Texas is $2.98 to $3.40.

$3.59.9 in my state - thanks mostly to stupid state and fed taxes and a governor who wants to boost the state tax another 5 cents per gallon -- friggin democrat moron that he is.
If democrats want to lower prices and help alleviate dependency on foreign oil, lower the damn taxes, which are far more than oil company profits per gallon. And start drilling in ANWAR and offshore.

Here I had changed my whole attitude about this issue! I had decided to be proud of the fact that MN had record gas price's in the US (I have no clue if this was true or not, but it got me through). Now(!!), MN's prices drop?? For the first time in how long?? I just can't win!
Seriously though. Memorial weekend is the first weekend since Xmas that my kids and I can visit some of our relatives (kids are out of school, the adults all have a long weekend off from work) and we can all be together at the same time. So it's kinda like do it now or miss out until next Xmas which sucks. Some of my relatives may not make it till then, ya know what I mean? This just sucks! But HEY! The price of gas just dropped here in MN, not where I live, but who cares!! Yee Haww....

Oh GOD, gas on the North Shore is going to be ridiculus. I'm trying to get back up there. I haven't been there since 2004. It will probably be next year now before I can go so I can actually budget for gas.

For that to be true the taxes would have had to have been increased approximately $1.00 per gallon over the past year. I don't know where you live but here the State Taxes have not budged in about 10 years and the federal tax has been fixed since way back in the 80's. Try and find another excuse until you are ready to admit it is the greed of the oil companies and the protection against anti-trust investigations provided by the current oil administration.

I will gladly trade with you. We have 2 cars both get in the 25-27 mpg range so we are not wasters. It currently takes around $60 per fillup for each (one on regular has a bigger tank than the one that requires premium) and a fillup lists no more than 1 week due to distances we need to drive to get to work.

AAA is on crack. I dont know anyone who is actually going to travel on memorial weekend. Sorry but I dont drive unless I HAVE to. THe Oil company is "testing" the markets to see how much they can get out of us and to see at what price we are willing to pay. Scam Scam Scam Scam. I hope they realize that if they continue to keep uping the prices everything else will be going down hill. What are they going to do when no one can afford to drive anymore? Obvisouly they are not thinking that far in advance. Just money is on the mind!

Why doesn't Bush authorize a realease of reserves to try and bring the price under control?? Or, like before, issue a temporary ease of taxes on gas to try and help out with the price? Because he doesn't really care what happens to the average American.
Oh, and did anyone else see the story about how gas is more expensive now than it was in adjusted dollars in the 70's during the Carter years? True.

True, but we're not talking about the price of oil...we're talking about the price of gas. The two haven't been going in the same direction. In the 70s, I believe the problems were caused by an oil embargo, which isn't the case today.

Because both he and Cheney are oil men. To do such things would prevent their beloved industry from raking in obscene profits which suits them just fine. Though their investments are in blind trusts they still realize they got tons of shares in oil companies and those stocks are soaring along with the current profits.

We are having our yearly family reunion in two weeks and many have a long way to drive, I think we will have a smaller turnout this year due to gas prices. I am thankful that I dont have far to go, already had to park one car that cant pass a gas station. its not new, its old and doesnt know about gas miles per gallon, when it was new a big V-8 was the way to go, that has long past.

The reason that this is the longest "spike" in gasoline prices is that it is NOT A SPIKE - it is the 'free market' allowing these greedy multinational corporations and their executive masters to screw the consumers of the whole world.
The price of gasoline in the US will continue to climb through the summer, then it will level off for a short while before another 'crisis' sends it upward again. A Gulf Coast hurricane, or 'inadequate refining capacity' due to 'those nasty environmentalist tree-huggers', or the winter will be colder than usual (or warmer than usual) -- take your pick. The oil companies will trump up some excuse to justify obscene profits that never seem to go into anything that would 'cure' the alleged causes of the high prices.
No new refineries, or expansion of existing refineries, or improvement in pipelines or other transportation methods - NOTHING will be done to 'repair' the alleged reasons for high gas prices. Ka-ching$$!

Actually, a few states charge all or a portion of their gasoline tax as a percentage of price: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and West Virginia. But the daily increases we are seeing generally go straight to the bottom line of the oil companies, not to government coffers.

The tax is a set amount per gallon, it doesn't change...if you suspend the taxes, you're hurting what those taxes pay for: roads, etc.
...unless you want to pay a toll every time you get on any freeway

I've been vehicle-free for the past 3 years and it's GREAT! Too bad this isn't an option for everyone.
Even before giving away my vehicle I switched to riding my bike almost everywhere and only used the truck when I absolutely had to. And this was long before gas was $3.55 or more per gallon. I even had a cool trailer I could pull with my bike to go and get groceries. I got it at www.bikerev.com

I hear plug-in hybrids are the ultimate solution and they're possible NOW. These people (www.calcars.com) converted a Prius car so they can plug it in. The equivalent of 125 miles per gallon (they can drive roughly 40-60 miles on electricity alone).
Maybe if we start calling our dealerships and demand plug-in hybrids they'll start doing in the factories what can already be done at home.

that is so true and I couldn't of said it better myself. No one does a damn thing about this, lets say gas bumped up in minnesota for $4.50 a gallon, no one would do a damn thing all they would do is whine about it, but thats it. If Everyone got together we could literally do something about this. No one is going to though, they whine but still pay the gas prices. They raise it for reasons they don't really need to raise it for.
1.)you have to go to work so they can raise it because YOU WILL pay it.
2.) you have to get groceries, see people, etc etc you WILL pay the price.
there is no excuse for them to raise it, they are raising the price because they CAN.

Keep every receipt for every gallon of gas you buy, people.
Then deduct that amount from your taxes at the end of the year.
Wait, I've got a better one: claim Single and 5 on your tax form and then when it's time to pay in, send the IRS a letter stating that since the government is no longer acting in the best interest of the people, you will no longer fund those efforts with your hard-earned money. Further, explain that the amount of taxes you didn't pay in is a subsidy to assist you with the increased cost of living due to ever-increasing fuel prices.
They still work for us, don't they? Or did they change that part of the Constitution behind closed doors while I was sleeping last night?

Something doesn't make sense. Every time the price of gas goes up all the oil company mouthpieces smile and say it's not gouging it's a simple matter of supply and demand you idiots! When the price took it's first spike demand went down but the price kept rising. Then they say it's all the environmentalists fault, they won't let them build more refineries. There's just as many refineries this year as there were last year but the price is higher this year. They moan and groan about their refining and exploration costs but their profits keep getting higher and higher. Something doesn't add up.

$5.50 is still too low, at such figure people can still afford it and will continue to compromise and remain to struggle to buy.
Can't wait till it reaches at $25.00 plus per gallon so that only the filthy rich can afford it.
No government officials have the ability to solve the continuing ever increasing price. They can only blabber useless words and whine, the only way to solve this issue is for all to not buy indefinitely. But unfortunately such option is not possible for so many.
Everyday, oil companies, owners and shareholders are all laughing their ass off with their gains. While the consumers, moan and groan and struggles of the ever increasing price.
Such is life:
1)- accept it, expect it, pay for it if you need it;
2)- Avoid or do without it if you can live without it;
3)- Or adapt to a new lifestyle.

Heck with fuels. I can't make fuel, but I can make electricity. I got so mad at the gas prices that I gutted out my Geo Metro and am installing an electic motor. I'll save my gas burners for long distance and heavy duty driving, but 90% of my driving is city under 45 and less than 50 miles a day. Electric suits my needs. Someone could make a lot of money converting these smaller cars, and if mine works out--it might be me!

NOW YOU'RE TALKING! It's been said that when the time is right for a great idea, everyone will think of it at the same time. Good for you, atvdesign. Rip out the engine, transmission, exhaust, gas tank, and so on. Slap in batteries, wires, a charger, a regulator, and an electric motor (with 1 moving part) and say f-you to the oil companies!
