This article is another one of those double standard math problems. The premise is we are driving cheaper now than in 1955, 72, or 81. So you adjust for inflation and falling dollar and what have you proven? Well let's roll back prices in the stores, and for durable goods and yes even taxes. Now where does that leave the price of gas?
In 1970 I made just over $450.00 a month as a young soldier. And not once did I have to scrimp by because I paid a high price at the pump. In fact driving my muscle car with its highway average of 16MPG, I never had to worry about getting around town.
Yes I make considerable more now, but the expenses are so much higher for everything that $3.00 a gallon does hurt.
I made a choice a few years ago to cut back by buying cars that only get 40-60 MPG. With the new Hybrids and the old reliable VW TDI, my fuel bills are far easier to cope with. If I could find a good, reasonably priced, electric or something other than gas I would buy one tomorrow
